Saskatchewan Reading Council

Who is the South West Reading Council?

 

The South West Reading Council is a local council of the Saskatchewan Reading Council, a special subject council of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and a council of the International Reading Association.

The following school divisions are a part of the South West Reading Council:

· Chinook

· Shaunavon Separate

· St. Paul’s

· Sun West

· Swift Current Separate

 

The South West Reading Council

provides opportunities for professional development and the promotion of literacy in communities across south western Saskatchewan.  We are always looking for new members and new ideas.  To get involved, please contact a member of the executive.

is open to anyone having a professional interest in the teaching of Language Arts and a love of reading.

Goals for 2008-2009

· to increase membership and interest in the South West Reading Council

· to increase the professional development opportunities for Language Arts Teachers

· to continue to be involved with programs such as Read to Me and the Young Writers’ Publication

· to provide provincial and international partnerships

 

Membership Benefits

 

Annual Reading Conference

The annual reading conference hosted by the Saskatchewan Reading Council features well known authors, guest speakers, local presenters and exhibitors to showcase literacy instruction.  As a member of the South West Reading Council, you receive a reduced conference rate.

 

Read to Me

Literacy Packages are distributed across the province to parents of newborn babies each spring to promote early literacy.  The package includes a free book for the baby, fridge magnets and information for parents about the importance of early literacy.

 

Query

Each year members receive three issues of the professional journal Query.  Query features literacy related articles and ideas from local to international perspectives as well as information about each of the local councils.

 

Young Writers’ Publication

An annual publication of Saskatchewan K-12 student writing is distributed to South West Reading Council members.  Members may submit student writing and look forward to receiving their copy each spring.
